Timeline

20-11 BF
  • Oberon first appears in the West as a visiting foreign nobleman. He tours the southern kingdoms, then disappears, soon forgotten save as an enigma.
10-1 BF
  • Four years into this decade (6 BF), Oberon appears upon the "unnavigable coast" of the north with an army and begins the Founding War. The Ceranos are the first to declare for him, which starts a tide of similar declarations by the smaller, weaker kingdoms of the land.
  • Oberon drives along the southern edge of the northern kingdoms, cutting off their supply lines and beating surrender out of those who do not fold quickly. It is a methodical, lumbering conquest, efficient while time-consuming.
  • The second year of the war ends with the North solidly in Oberon's hands. The southern kingdoms have lumber reserves aplenty, however, and do not yet feel the pinch. Several of the cleverer southern kings, however, send emissaries to discuss the future with Oberon.
  • Oberon sets his sights on Andros (4BF). He determines to drive through the valley that is part of Tarraign's lands, and is rebuffed, repeatedly. It is a costly diversion for Oberon that sets his timetable back by a number of months; eventually, Tarraign falls and swears to Oberon: at his side, Fineas Tarraign oversees the southern campaign of the Founding War.
  • The Androsian campaign is the first major undertaking of the war, by contrast to the first two years in the north, but fall it does, at last, with the claiming of the supposedly impregnable Bran Brasil.
  • Meanwhile, key kingdoms in the west declare for Oberon, while those resistant ones are hit by a secondary naval force from out of the deep southern seas.
  • The fourth year of the war concludes with all but the southeast in Oberon's hands. The most stubborn and most afeared of their neighbors are there, and look to the continued holdout of those in Kolvirsgaard that resistance is still possible.
  • Oberon, with his forces battered, and the politics of his new alliance taking on more and more weight, puts off actual military action for the next year, though he blockades the southeastern ports and prevents any trade with the lands north and west of the final resistance.
  • Oberon's strategy pays off, giving his men time to rest and his kingdom time to come to terms with itself; those on the edges of the southeast quietly make arrangements with Oberon to let him past once he makes his drive for Kolvir.
  • The drive for Kolvir occupies the final year of the war, and concludes with the death of Nod and the wedding of Oberon to Cymnea, Nod's eldest.
0-9 AF
  • The war of annexation concludes.
  • The kingdom of Amber is founded.
  • Oberon spends this decade quelling internal disputes and forging defenses at the kingdom's borders. Additionally, he orders that Fortress Kolvir be moved from the peak of the mountain to a point somewhat further down the southern side, overlooking the harbor.
10-19 AF
  • The tenth anniversary marks the beginning of the Great Peace and concludes the final reconstruction of the Fortress. The young kingdom takes its time to heal and better itself.
  • Cymnea gives birth to twin sons -- Finndo and Osric.
20-29 AF
  • Cyrus is born to low circumstance.
30-39 AF
  • The 20th anniversary of the Great Peace is marked by celebrations all over the kingdom.
  • The Academy at Tarraign holds a series of gatherings of some of the finest minds in the kingdoms. Some debates last months.
40-49 AF
  • A young Cyrus enters the navy.
  • A steel-colored comet is seen in the skies. The common folk see it as an omen; the Lords, less swayed by superstition, nonetheless become restless. Talk of needs to expand the borders of the Kingdom begins to surface.
  • Unable to quell the expansionist urges of his Lords, he appoints the loudest -- Rudolf Boyd -- as Admiral of the Navies, and leaves the campaigning under Boyd's direction.
  • Boyd targets several of the Outer Kingdoms that have access to the sea in the North, commencing the War of Expansion -- or, as it is later called, Boyd's War. He scores a few early victories before the war enters into a three-year stalemate (45-48 AF).
  • The stalemate is broken by an allied fleet of several of the Outer Kingdoms that manages to Ambush the better part of Boyd's fleet at sea, leaving only the burning hulks of ships, and one survivor: Cyrus. It is the greatest naval disaster that Amber has ever seen.
  • Oberon takes over the campaign, stripping Boyd of his Admiralcy and sending him off to the Isles. He is unable to halt the war outright, however, but manages to shift the tide back to a stalemate within a few months.
  • Cyrus returns to service after a short period of recovery.
50-59 AF
  • An attack from out of the southern sea by the Outer Kingdoms found there marks the opening of a second front to the war. Despite Oberon's best efforts, the Amber navy is steadily whittled down.
  • A decisive battle is fought near the Isles of the Sun, when the defeated Amber Navy is desperately trying to retreat back into safe waters, chased by the combined forces of the Outer Kingdoms. Ships are needed to hold the line: Cyrus's ship is among them, and he takes command when the Captain is killed early in the battle. His small group of ships is instrumental in giving Amber's forces the necessary time to regroup at the Harbor, though much life is lost to buy it.
  • Without warning, a great storm sweeps in not too long after Amber's remaining forces dock. Cyrus and his men are forced to find refuge in the Isles; many of the Outer Kingdoms' ships are lost at sea.
  • Later, an uneasy truce is sought and found between Amber and the Outer Kingdoms.
  • Cyrus receives a Knighthood, a manor, and a bride, for his efforts in the war.
60-69 AF
  • Benedict is born.
  • Oberon spends much of his third son's youth restoring the balance of his Kingdom. He has little time to spare.
  • The defection of a Far Lord to the Outer Kingdoms (taking his lands with him) sparks a border conflict that threatens to escalate into another war, but a settlement is reached, dividing those lands in half.
70-79 AF
  • Sybil is born.
  • Rumors surface of one called the "Iron Witch", who is gathering a rebellion against Oberon's rule. The rumors lead to tensions at court, but the witch, if indeed she exists, never surfaces.
  • Acts of piracy continue to rise as the last naval war fades into memory and the waters become less patrolled. It is not without incidents, however, as the occasional Navy ship crosses swords with them.
80-89 AF
  • Baron Karm has a daughter, named Sonnet.
  • Several manticore sightings lead to the establishment of an annual hunt by Oberon. The Hunt eventually becomes a single event of The Royal Games, where the best of the Duchies compete for honor, recognition, and the rare royal boon.
  • Karm quarrels with Cerano, leading to the death of Lord Tallac Cerano, the head of that house, and to the sucession by Cecil Cerano. Tallac was well liked, and the political complications are many; Oberon appeases many by fostering Karm's daughter to Governor Boyd: the leash on Karm is stronger.
  • The third Games is cut short by a series of border skirmishes between the Far Lords and the Outer Kingdoms. Kashfa, Begma, and Ghenesh establish themselves as the dominant players from the Outer Kingdoms, and lead the delegation that sues for peace before another great war develops.
90-100 AF
  • Fire rains from the sky over the ocean, beyond the Isles of the Sun. The sight is seen all the way back to the mainland, but, on later investigation, nothing is found to explain it.
  • Dorcester sends several of its best ships south to explore beyond the known seas. They are not heard from again.
  • The tenth annual Games see a fundamental change as Oberon invites those of the Outer Kingdoms to participate. Few actually do so, but their presence is felt nonetheless.
  • A large but unorganized barbarian force emerges from the west, and are repelled; the western duchies are bruised by the event, but not beaten.
