Okay, folks -- here are, at least, A, B, C, and D of the plot for Session 19 (Doing Time). I'll try to provide a printout for the six of you (5 regulars + lease) at game time. A: Pretrial Cy Rand, guardsman, and several other nameless guardsmen lead Sonnet down a prison hallway to the room where Dr. O. Sarich performs his evaluations. Once there, the rest of the guardsman leave, but Cyrus is left to make sure that Sonnet doesn't try anything on the doctor (nevermind that she's gonna be chained to her seat). Evaluation (questions, but no explanations of her circumstances, please) commences. She's then lead back to her cell, where things kinda fade to black. B: Trial The players Alyra Watson Lease Advocate for the Defense Finn Donogan Rob Prosecutor Dr. O. Sarich Jarrod Psychologist, Expert Hon. Benedict Dorr Scott Lesser Judge Hon. Coram Rosewood Lydia Lesser Judge Rt. Hon. K. Oberon Fred Greater Judge The gist We fade in as Sonnet is sitting off to the side, on a small pedestal, chained to her seat. The Advocates stand before the judges; a conversation about each Advocate's position occurs, basically, with the designated Lesser Judges. The Greater Judge is (more than anything) a referee here who can make final calls. Questions can occasionally be directed to the accused, or to experts and witnesses who are also in attendance (such as Dr. Sarich). The Advocate for the Defense is allowed to have private side-conversations with the accused if requested and granted by the Greater Judge. That Sonnet committed the crimes (mass murder) is not really contestable; there's a mountain of physical evidence pointing to that. The primary point of contestation -- at this point in the trial -- is the question of whether or not she is 'remediably insane'. This society does not have quite as clear-cut an insanity defense; instead, if someone can be cured, the defense can work, but if they cannot, they can be deemed as 'too dangerous to society to be allowed to live', and prosecution can proceed as normal (in other words, it has nothing to do with whether or not the accused was able to distinguish between right and wrong). The trial should consist of some questions and answers (there's no first-prosecution-then-defense thing here, so the Advocates can speak up whenever they wish, so long as one is not shouting down the other). Dr. Sarich can be called forward as needed; Sonnet can be addressed, but is technically only allowed to speak in response to a question. Dr. Sarich should be biased towards considering Sonnet incurable, but however Jarrod wants to play that is his bag. The lesser Judges (Scott and Lydia) should feel free to ask questions independent of those posed by the Advocates. The trial should go on for a 'comfortable' length of screen-time, and at its greatest extent will end either with a recess being called, or with all questions raised and discussed, with the Judges recessing to arrive at a verdict. A verdict won't be delivered on-screen, at any rate. Outside of these bits of structure, feel free to make shit up. This is improv theatre as applied to a courtroom drama. C: Cellblock This is where Sybil shows up, as Sonnet's cellmate. Her conversations with Sonnet should pick up _in medias res_, as it were -- as though there have been plans for breaking out of jail for a while now, which are supposed to take their final form tonight, in a couple hours. For the time, though, Sybil and Sonnet get to chatter and so forth, so Deborah, chew your scenery and have fun with it. I'll try to flexibly run with whatever elements of The Plan are established, but they should involve, at minimum, someone cutting the power at a particular time, and the help of an insider to get folks part of the way there (I may tap one of the other players to play this insider, when the time comes). D: Jailbreak The Plan goes off; things will probably go awry, possibly even with Sybil getting gunned down. This will sync up with the "real world" where Sonnet starts to have complications on the operating table. Depending on how Shai plays this, we'll see how things will progress from here. Ideally, this should conclude somewhere around half an hour before we intend to wrap the session, so folks, please communicate to me what time you need to be out the door, and I'll try to size things to fit.
