Born to be Kings: The Atlas

There's a lot to know about the Kings setting, much of which has been built cooperatively with the players. This Atlas is intended as a living document to which the growing background material of the campaign is contributed.

Geography

Let's make it easy, first: Here's a page with a link to the PDF map and current shared-world-building assignments.

The kingdom and lands of Amber are bisected into northern and southern regions by a broad mountain range called the Aesens that runs from the west to the east, curving slightly southward as it nears the sea. The final mountain on the east is Kolvir, which is also the tallest mountain of the range.

The northern lands are difficult to tame and thus still retain some wilderness aspects to them. The former kings who occupy these lands have less political clout, in general, than those in the south, but the harder living has molded them in different ways. Those dukes living further within and beyond the forest, are called the Far Lords.

To the north of these rocky northlands is the forest Arden. Most of the northern duchies abut this forest and claim some small portion of it for lumber trade.

The deeper forest is largely unexplored, though Oberon claims that much of it rightly belongs to Amber. The Outer Kings beyond the forest have not seen fit to dispute this claim, though without making clear the reasons; those Far Lords who live on the opposite side of Arden are perhaps the kingdom's most troublesome, but in some ways, also the most valued, as they guard the borders with their own lands.

The Near Lords are those who occupy the fertile southern lands, and those who sit immediately upon the Aesens or just to the north of them, in the mineral-rich foothills.

The southern lands hold much of the wealth, as the mining interests on this side of the Aesens are just as plentiful as the north, and beyond this, the southern lands encompass nearly all of the usable farmland. The estates of the Near Lords of the South are lush and opulent; so too, often, are the occupants.

Riding east to west, the Kingdom of Amber takes perhaps two weeks to cross by horse -- assuming no complications of terrain.
