Setting

Crown of Amber is an Amber campaign set in the middle days of Oberon's reign. Llewella, Random, and Flora haven't been born yet, and Oberon has only made a few sojourns in shadow in avoidance of his rule. Currently, he is actively ruling in Amber.

Most of the Elders live within the kingdom proper, seldom wishing to let each other out of their sight for long. Those who don't are in the Crown's employ, or are spending time in the Golden Kingdoms (not yet called the Circle, because there are only three members -- Ghenesh, Kashfa, and Begma).

Oberon's rule is characterized by a tough, but even hand, and is fairly popular with the non-blooded nobility. He is regarded as the heart and health of the realm.

Gerard is the youngest, well under a century in age, and has as yet to prove himself. The common knowledges and departures-from-the-novels are covered in the Elders section below.

Amber has been a stable kingdom, involved only in the occasional minor war, for the last few centuries.

How to position your character in this setting

Characters should have a reason to be in or about Amber (where 'about' is 'within a day's shadowride', more or less). A blooded background is recommended (it's the default), or at least a level of near-Reality. If you're going to go for a character from an outlying region of Amber, it's probably a good idea to go for a diplomat, merchant, or other schtick that would compel you to end up in Amber and be viewed in some light of importance.

You do not have to play a character that must be and start in Amber, but the character should hold some amount of respect or even love for Amber, and not object to performing deeds which would win one favor there.

Exceptions should be discussed privately with the GM.

The Elders of Crown of Amber

Who Shortdesc Background
Oberon The King of Amber

Oberon is a tough, even-handed King. As a King, he performs his job well and to the benefit of the realm. As a father or grandfather, he is often distant, demanding, and unpredictable, and has developed a strong talent for keeping his children on their toes.

Benedict Elder Guardian

Benedict has inherited his father's tendency toward distance. While not emotionless, he avoids spending time with his siblings if he can help it. When he is not away in shadow, he spends his time patrolling Amber's wilderness with the Amber mountaineering corps.

Eric The Smiling Prince

Eric is a politician, through and through, and has a talent of getting people to agree with him despite their personal feelings for him. He spends his time fielding political matters in court, attending to those which aren't of a priority that need to reach Oberon's ears. Of all the Princes, he is regarded as the most responsible -- sometimes, to a fault.

Corwin The Untamed Prince

Corwin is an unruly scoundrel, given to moods, but is often looked on by Oberon with some favor and certainly more tolerance than his other siblings. Some believe that his mother spoiled him as the first legitimate son she had by Oberon, Eric being born just a few months before she was wed to the King, and that this has prevented Corwin from ever, truly growing up.

Deirdre Princess of the Moon

Deirdre is a gentle spirit who has captivated the nobility with her charm and wit. She is not spineless, but seems to have a softer social gift than her brother Eric. Her estate is a series of grand, terraced gardens that overlook the city and the sea, earlier upon Kolvir than the castle, and her nighttime revels have entertained the upper crust of Amber for decades, never boring.

Caine Sea-Admiral

A bastard by Rilga years before she became queen, Prince Caine has never pushed for adoption by his father. It's said that when questioned on the subject, he has said, "Why would I want to be other than I am?" and left it at that. He inspires fierce loyalty in his men, and fierce passion in his women. No one has commanded a fleet as well as he.

Fiona Fire-Witch

Fiona reminds people of her mother. Too much. Ignored by Oberon, she became Clarissa's favorite and private child. She is reported to have learned much of her mother's ways, and speaks her mind as if her words should be law. A tower of the castle is hers, uncontested, and few are ever admitted there.

Bleys Playboy

Bleys is seldom in Amber save when he's passing through to show off. A peacock in terms of his dress, Bleys basks in the opulence and advantage of being a Prince of Amber. Much of his time in shadow is spent courting the daughters of various Kingdoms eager to win a Prince's favor and thereby a gateway to Golden Kingdom status.

Brand The Artist

A great sponsor of the arts in Amber, Prince Brand shows no outward signs of regret about his illegitimacy. Born after Oberon divorced his mother, but before her disappearance, Brand was left to pursue less masculine pasttimes than his elder brothers. His paintings are called genius by the artistic elite of the city, and bring a high price throughout the neighboring kingdoms.

Julian The Hunter

Though only some several centuries old, Julian is already reknowned as the best hunter Amber and Shadow have seen. Oberon has given him charge of the Arden Rangers, and Julian has trained them into one of the more formidable components of Amber's land defense. Invaders have tried to best Amber by way of Arden, and have soon learned what it is like to be Julian's game.

Gerard The Kid

Still regarded as a child for his handful of decades' age, Gerard is the youngest of the Elders. Not yet as hardened as his brothers, he currently captains a small, coast-bound fleet in the Navy, and spends much of his time in taverns about town.

Locations

Rebma trades with Amber, but does not encourage tourism by the general passers-by. They're known to make exceptions for royalty.

Ghenesh is an arabian culture, one of the three Golden Kingdoms. It is predominantly desert, but exports thousands of exotic spices which are in high demand.

Kashfa is a classic european kingdom, which echoes Amber in a number of respects.

Begma is a crescent-shaped country bordering on Kashfa. Much of it is seafront, and the Begman navy is the second largest known in shadow, next to Amber's.

Chaos is a word, not a place.
